Our Method

'We invite artists of all abilities. Our exercises are designed for all levels, from beginner to advanced.'

Our programmes typically follow the school term, comprised of modules lasting 2-3 weeks. Each module involves lectures and demonstrations from the instructor, with exercises that can be practiced in and outside of the studio.

First term students can expect to be introduced to:

Drawing fundamentals

The fundamentals of drawing form the foundation of your skill set. We will explore concepts such as line, shape, and form, as well as principles like value, contrast, and proportion. 

​

Exercises include:

  • Shape and form 

  • Value (Light and shadow)

  • Perspective basics

Drawing from life

Through observational drawing exercises we will explore how artists learn to 'see', deconstructing complex objects and figures into simple forms that can be applied to any subject.

Exercises include:

  • Still life studies

  • Dancer gestural drawing

  • Studying from photos vs. life​

Simplification and style

Using lessons in portraiture - we will discover how artists have expressed themselves with different techniques, while still using core drawing fundamentals as the foundation of their style.

Exercises include:

  • Self Portraits

  • Asaro head - Seeing in 3 dimensions

  • Stylisation and simplification of the face

Creative Briefs

Craft your own personal project based on your own creative brief. Using the skills learned throughout the course, students undertake their own guided projects.

  • Project building

  • Developing an idea - from brain to page

  • Polishing - How to finish a piece
